Wooden Decking: Make it last longer with proper maintenance

22 May. 2017

Wooden decking makes a lovely addition to any garden, a place to sit outside on a warm day or evening and creates a connection between the inside comforts of the home and the tranquillity of being outside. But being wood, and being exposed to the elements all year round, it needs to be cared for if you want it to remain looking new and last as long as possible. Here are a few tips on how to properly maintain wooden deck.

Keeping the wooden deck clean is very important to ensure it stays in good condition for as long as possible. It is worth giving your deck a full top to bottom clean at least once per year. Even better, clean it on a regular basis. This involves scrubbing away any bits of dirt and clearing any leaves or debris that have accumulated. Dirt should be cleaned with a hand scrub, or a broom. A pressure washer may do more damage to your wooden deck than good. You can also make an effort to prevent dirt accumulating. For example, if you keep plants on your decking, you can put them on top of blocks of cement to stop the dirt from coming into contact with the wood. If you happen to live in an area where it snows in winter, clear the snow as soon as possible.

It is also important to keep a look out for cracks and splinters. If left alone, these can start to create bigger and bigger problems. If you come across deck that seems to be starting to splinter, the problem may be resolved by sanding it down to keep its appearance and prevent the problem from spreading. If you have a piece of wood that has split down the middle, the sooner you replace that plank the better.

Sealing the wood regularly is vital for protecting it from rain, moisture and the sun. If you regularly seal your deck then it will protect it from rotting and help it to last longer. This is something you can do yourself, or have done professionally. If you choose to do it yourself, it is best to do it every year, whilst a professional job may only need repeating every 2-3 years.

Do not use bleach to clean wooden deck. Bleach is an effective cleaning agent on hard, nonporous surfaces, but it is not a good idea to use bleach to clean wood. It's true that it will kill bacteria and mould that has accumulated on the deck, but it will also cause damage to the otherwise healthy wood, lightening its colour and eventually weakening its structure as well. If you want something stronger than water to clean away bits of mould and bacteria, one of the safer options is hydrogen peroxide, which shouldn't cause any damage to the structure of the wood.

It's natural that wooden deck will begin to show a little bit of wear and tear after a few years, but if you follow these tips, you can ensure that it stays in the best condition for as long as possible.
