How to Maintain a Wooden Bench

14 Dec. 2015

One of the best ways of adding some character to your garden is by buying or building a wooden bench. Wooden benches provide your garden with a beautiful focal point, give you somewhere to sit in the sun or take a break from mowing the lawn. Because you are not very likely to take your garden seat indoors with you every time the weather changes, the timber is going to come into contact with all weathers. If left untreated, the timber in a softwood bench will quickly rot and the bench will become useless. After you spend all that money to buy your garden seat or the timber in the first place, all it takes is a bit more money to protect it from the elements. Here are some tips on doing just that.

Most softwood benches will not be treated when you buy them. If they are, you might be well advised to do a bit of home DIY treating of your own, just to be on the safe side. As we've said, you have just spent your money, why not invest a little bit more making sure the bench is going to last a long time? Treatment means covering all the surfaces of the new bench with weather proofing. This comes in the form of paints or other sealants. Because the timber bench is not only going to be made from timber, but will use other elements such as iron or steel, you will need to purchase the appropriate sealant for each element, then simply follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Of course, if you go for a hardwood bench, you can choose to let the timber weather on its own. This can bring a lovely dimension to your garden. This type of weathering of hardwood will not affect the strength of the bench, it will only add depth and colour. The only thing you might have to do with your hardwood bench is clean it once a year. A pressure washer is the ideal way of doing this. If you have a finished bench, you might want to clean it more regularly to keep it looking shiny and new.

For the most part, your wooden bench is going to look after itself. Wood is one of the best materials to use in any outside environment because it is natural, grows in nature and is perfectly built to withstand rain or shine, storm or calm. When you purchase your bench, or the timber for constructing your bench, ask the shop assistant for information on whether you need to weatherproof your bench now and how to look after it in the future.
