How to Erect Wooden Shelf Brackets

23 Jun. 2015

If you are looking to save some space in your home, office or garage, one of the best ways of doing this is to utilise the space on your walls. Hanging a few shelves here and there means that you can use the space that would otherwise be left bare. You can put up shelves above other pieces of furniture such as your desk, a chest of drawers, a dining table or in the bathroom above the toilet and wash basin. One of the easiest ways of putting up a shelf is with shelf brackets. Here are three tips on how to properly erect your wooden shelf brackets. First we'll look at using heavy duty anchors, then at levelling your brackets and shelf, and finally we'll take a quick look at how you can avoid drooping shelving.

When and How to Use Heavy Duty Anchors
Most shelving brackets can be put up using plastic plugs in the wall. But there are some situations where you will need some more heavy duty strength. For instance, if you are going to hang your shelf on dry walling, you will need a firm anchor. Usually this means using a type of anchor that has a spring in the back. You simply drill a hole in the dry wall, insert your anchor, allow the spring to flip out and affix your screws.

Getting Your Levels Right
You should always use a spirit level to make sure you get the level of your shelf just right. One way of doing this is to install one bracket at about the right height. Once this is done, offer the other bracket to the wall, place a piece of light wood across the fixed bracket and the one you are temporarily holding and use the spirit level to get everything straight. Mark your holes for the second bracket, drill the holes and affix the bracket. Your shelf should be perfectly level.

How to Avoid Droopy Shelves
You can avoid having droopy shelves by using the right materials from the beginning. Use enough brackets to give the whole shelf good support. Also, use some good wood for the shelf itself. If you are using plywoods, be sure to use a good thickness.

As you can see, if you use your head and the right set of tools, it can be pretty straightforward to put up some shelf brackets. Of course, using shelf brackets is not the only way of erecting your shelving. But it is one the cheapest, quickest and easiest forms of shelving for those with some basic do it yourself skills. If you don't like where your shelves are placed or you want to move them for any other reason, you only have to take them down and fill a couple of holes in the wall.
