Tips for Decorating Your Timber Fence

25 Nov. 2014

The humble timber fence must be one of the most loved and abused structures in our garden. A timber fence is miles better than anything made of brick or concrete, but it does require a bit of tender loving care. Using a stain, preservative or paint once a year on your fence is more than enough, so you certainly don't have to be out there treating it like you would your lawn. But why not consider decorating this practical, humble, essential part of our garden as well as the inside of our homes? Let's take a look at a few different ideas to decorate, show off, and even accessorise your humble garden timber fence.

One great idea to decorate your fence is to paint a mural. A fence mural can be done by you in a short space of time, will last a long time while helping to protect the wood and can be repainted when you get fed up.

How about painting the spiky posts or lats like pencils and pens? Better still, paint them like colouring pencils. Each post would be painted in a different colour body and tip, with the shaved piece left like natural wood.

You could use your kids' old wellie boots to accessorise along the fence. How quickly do your kids grow out of their wellies or how quickly do they wear them out with all that jumping and splashing? By attaching them to the fence, they can become lovely colourful little garden pots for planting herbs and flowers.

Another idea for adding a bit of spice to your fence is to use some old reclaimed cupboard doors as a feature, pretending that they are a doorway to another dimension, or something as equally magical. The kids will love it.

Add some lights to add sparkle. Use your imagination by adding permanent outdoor Christmas lights to make a section of your fence sparkle and look elegant.

One final idea is to add some shelving units to the stronger areas along the fence, then you can add plant pots, ornaments, lights, jars, cups, or whatever, to add something different. There are a million ideas to create a fantastic timber fence in your garden by looking at it through the eyes of a decorator instead of just a preserver. For some more inspiration, get onto the internet. Look at photo sharing sites like Pinterest for ideas.
