Hi Jeremy,

Just thought I would send you some photos of the finished curved floor/wall that you supplied the timber for.

Looks great and everyone commentson it.

Thanks for your help with the timber selection.

Front and Back Porches

30 May. 2014

A porch outside your house can add a touch of class, a convenient spot to stick your muddy boots in the winter before trailing everything through the house, or an indoor room outdoors during those long, balmy days of summer. There are many types of porches that you can build depending on your taste, the amount of space you have, how much money you can afford to spend, and what your intended use is.

The first type of porch you might like to consider is your basic front porch. That is a covered area just outside your front door that gives you at least enough room to change out of wet clothes and footwear before you come into the main house. It might contain a hanging area for wet clothes, under which you would throw your muddy boots, and perhaps an umbrella stand for the extra nice touch. You might have room in this porch for a chair to take a load off, or you could have room for a whole suite. This type of porch is an ideal place to greet neighbours or guests. It gives them a protected area to stand while waiting for you to answer the door.

A back porch, on the other hand, can be a much more informal affair. It will be out of the prying gaze of the nosy neighbour, a place where only the select few are invited. It is a place meant primarily for you and your family, a place to chill, and a place of relaxation. Back porches tend to have a more functional purpose and therefore design. They are really an extension of the living area of the home, a gentle push out into the garden area.

What type of material is the best for porches? My own preference is wood. There's just something special about sitting in a wooden porch, meeting nature with the natural. Of course there is an abundance of material that you can use these days to build your perfect porch. You can also feel free to fill your porch with whatever your heart desires. A TV room in the summer, a play area to get the kids out of the main house in the winter, a zen like relaxation area, whatever takes your fancy.

Finally, modern materials have made it very possible for you to have a porch for all seasons. You can take advantage of your porch in the summer months by either leaving the sides open or covering them with screens. And there's no need to be a house hermit in the winter. There are many alternatives for removable window panels. The choice is yours.
