A Brief History of Particle Board

28 Apr. 2014

Particle board has been around for quite a while. It was thought up by German Luftwaffe fighter pilot and inventor Max Himmelheber, in first made in a factory in Bremen, Germany during the second world war. Those first boards were made up of wood scraps, shavings, sawdust, and offcuts, all glued together using a specialist resin. Before the pieces were glued together, they would be smashed and pounded in order to create small enough pieces that would pass through a specific sized wire mesh.

Once the basic process had been discovered, it was time for a bit of refinement. The first refinement was to produce a more uniform chip. By making a uniform sized chip, made from processing woods such as birch, larch, pine, and spruce, a board could be manufactured which had better overall strength, wouldn't need as much resin to bind the whole lot together and could achieve a much better appearance. Once this had been achieved, the manufacturers went on to produce a board known as three-layer particle board. This three piece approach comprised two thin outer layers of the more expensive and more durable particle board, between which was sandwiched a thicker layer of the cheaper material. Today's particle boards are formed by using compression and temperature to make a much harder consistency.

When particle board first came onto the market, it was only made available to the wealthy because the price was higher than some real timbers. Over time, the manufacturing process matured, the supply became more steady, and the material became cheaper. Some of the biggest furniture manufacturers on the planet have grown because of the wide availability and low cost of particle board. In some areas, the low cost and increasing durability of particle board has overtaken and often displaced solid wood in the manufacture of low cost and medium cost furniture.

One of the biggest benefits is the absolute versatility of particle board. You can use it for a variety of different purposes in the home, office, or factory setting. The size of the boards, along with the density and quality, can be adjusted depending on what the market wants. Another huge advantage is that in our modern day climate of waste, particle board is like a knight in shining armour, gathering up all the waste and trimmings that are left behind from solid wood work, and using every last morsel to create and keep on creating.
