Partition Walls

29 Jan. 2014

A partition wall is a wall that doesn't bear any weight, divides a room or rooms, and is generally made from a variety of materials such as glass, brick, or timber. The type of partition wall that we are interested in here is the stud partition wall. This popular type of internal wall is usually constructed using timber and plasterboard as the main building materials. The advantages of using this type of wall are very simple. A stud partition makes a very strong and durable wall. This type of partition is super simple to construct. It is very lightweight, so you won't break your back putting it together. More importantly when time is an issue, it can be built very quickly. Another great advantage is that if you need to include pipes or wiring, they can be accommodated very easily. It's also a simple process to install these things after the wall is built.

Some of the materials and tools you will need to build a partition stud wall include the plasterboard and lengths of timber to make up the framework. The amounts will depend on the size of the wall. You will also need plasterboard nails and a hammer to drive them in. If you're going to add a door to your finished partition stud wall, you will need a door lining. Also, depending on how you want your new wall to look, you might need some plaster. If you go down that route, you will also need some other supplies like a box or two of wire nails, some jointing tape, jointing compound, and a sharp knife. Another essential in successfully making your partition wall is a willing person with strong arms to hold up the sheets of plasterboard while you fix them into place. It can be very difficult, if not hilarious, to watch someone trying to hold a partition board in place while hammering in a nail.

As with any other construction job, planning is very important. It doesn't take much planning to build this simple partition, but you must make sure all your measurements are right before you start. Not only will this ensure that your wall is going to cover the space that you want it to, it will also make sure you're not making any unnecessary trips to the supplier to get extra materials. When you are planning your wall, there are a few other essentials that you take care of. Think about things like the positioning of your doors. Also think about lighting. If you can build your wall to take advantage of natural daylight, all well and good. If not, you're going to need to include some lighting into your new room layout.

Finally, don't forget to check your building regulations. Sometimes you might need to add layers of insulation for sound. You might consider adding these anyway as they will not only help to keep the sound interference from adjoining rooms to a minimum, but good insulation will also cut down on your heating costs during the cold months.
